If you are suffering from pain or tightness in your jaw, headaches, neck pain, earaches, or tender gums and teeth, you may have temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD/TMJ). Our Winnipeg dentist can diagnose and help treat this common jaw condition.
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD/TMJ) is a disorder of the jaw joint characterized by severe headaches, jaw pain, teeth grinding, and ringing in the ears, among other things.
TMJ (temporomandibular jointis) refers to the hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side-to-side so you can talk and eat properly.
TMD refers to the disorder of this joint that causes issues with your jaw and the muscles in your face.
TMD/TMJ can be caused by a variety of factors including jaw injuries, joint diseases (like arthritis), and misalignment of the teeth or jaw. The disorder can cause a host of symptoms because your compromised jaw muscles have to work extra hard. These symptoms often become worse during periods of stress.
Common symptoms include:
At Norwood Dental Centre, we can test for and diagnose TMD/TMJ and provide an immediate plan to treat it.
We may suggest wearing a night mouth guard and/or Low Level Laser Therapy to help relax the muscles and reduce your symptoms
The treatment plan may also include relaxation techniques and a referral to a physiotherapist, chiropractor or massage therapist and/or possibly medication for pain relief.
Untreated TMD/TMJ can be a factor in eroded jawbones and loose teeth. If you are experiencing any symptoms, visit your dentist for a proper diagnosis.
